It's official - Thuli Madonsela launches her own foundation

While there was news of former public protector Thuli Madonsela's plans to launch her own foundation - as of 20 February, it's official. Earlier this week, Madonsela launched the Thuli Madonsela (Thuma) Foundation - an NGO focused on strengthening democracy through advocacy and the empowerment of those living in South Africa.

Building on the legacy of its founder, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, which includes, principled leadership, people empowerment and resolute defence of the rule law, constitutional democracy, social justice and the promotion of good governance, including anti-corruption and administrative justice, the Thuma foundation seeks to promote good citizenship by empowering persons and communities to make democracy work for themselves, while actively defending and deepening democracy as the key to sustainable development and peaceful coexistence within and between.

The foundation's launch coincided with an event at Constitution Hill for the United Nations' World Day of Social Justice. In partnership with Khulisa Social Solutions, Madonsela's foundation launched the Walk in My Shoes campaign.

Professor Thuli Madonsela has become an icon of all that South Africa’s fledgling democratic nation strives to be, and thus we are incredibly honoured to embark on this partnership with her.

The event provided a platform for marginalised voices to be heard by the public - encouraging society to come up with solutions to improve access to social justice for these people. The campaign promotes interactive storytelling as a way to bridge gaps between people.

According to Khulisa Social Solutions, this is part of the Thuma Foundation's commitment to improving social justice in South Africa.

The five core pillars of the Thuli Madonsela Foundation are democracy dialogues, access to information, advocacy, research and training and through this ongoing partnership we aim to not only deliver improved access to social justice across marginalised and impoverished communities in South Africa but we also hope to create a global Social Justice Champions movement whereby global South Africans can play their part and contribute towards a better South Africa.

The power of storytelling in our society can never be underestimated. It empowers, educates, entertains and most importantly it heals. Its ‘reach’ as a technique is extraordinary – all are touched, drawn in and invited to respond.

What's next for Madonsela's foundation? We will have to wait and see.
